Life is an ever evolving journey that comes with ups and downs. In this post I’m going to give you 10 of my best life lessons for Latinas that I wish I knew sooner. My hope is that you implement the ones that resonate with you and you share this post with your amigas and primas so they can do the same!
1. You have all the control
You are a powerful being. When you learn that you are creating your reality, everything changes. Unfortunately, we aren’t taught this in school. If you want to go deep, there are systems in place to keep the masses at a certain level. This includes not teaching us about our personal powers.
I’m referring to our thoughts. Once you learn how to manage your thoughts, you are better able to create the life you want. Our brains don’t know whether your thoughts are real or an imagination. This is why visualization is so effective. We attract what we believe, which begins with our thoughts. If you need more help on this, I can help you!
2. You only get one body, take care of it
This is one of the most important life lessons for Latinas and everyone in general tbh. Oftentimes, we tend to take our health for granted until we get sick. The following Confucius quote resonates so much with this life lesson: “A healthy (wo)man wants a thousand things, a sick (wo)man wants one.”
It is so true. You can have all the money in the world but if you don’t have your health the money won’t matter since you can’t take it with you. Treat your body like a temple by honoring it. Feed it healthy foods and plenty of water and make sure to get some exercise even if it’s simply walking around the block once or twice a day.
3. La gente siempre va hablar
Sometimes we consciously (or subconsciously) stop ourselves from trying new things or avoid steering off the conventional path because we’re concerned about other peoples’ opinions. We might have “crazy” dreams or maybe we don’t want to take risks because que va decir la gente?
Well I’m here to tell you that la gente siempre va hablar. No matter what you decide to do (or not do), people are going to talk. It’s important to understand that it’s just people’s opinions and you’re not going to die from them. Regret will make a greater and more lasting impact in your heart and life than “disappointing” other people.
4. Comparison kills creativity
When it comes to pursuing your goals and dreams, it’s important to be laser focused as much as possible. Once you start comparing yourself to others, it will affect your magic! You were born with talents, skills and abilities that are unique to YOU. Also, I have to remind you that everyone is on their individual life journey and you never know the behind the scenes of other peoples’ lives.
Another reminder here is that social media tends to show only the highlights. Positive highlights. So whenever your brain starts to compare you to others, remind yourself that you are both on different life chapters. Trust your inner magic and go out and create!
5. There’s always something to be grateful for
Gratitude changes lives for the better and there is always something to be grateful for. One of the best ways to begin your day is by naming 5 things you are grateful for (different things each day). You’ll soon begin to feel a shift and start feeling happier. Being grateful is the secret formula to a joyful life.
No matter what your current circumstances are, there is something to be grateful for. Even during your most difficult times, there was something to be grateful for. Whether it involved your health (clean air to breathe, clean running water for your health and hygiene, food to nourish your body, etc) or tangible things (a roof over your head to protect you from the outdoor elements, clothes to keep your body warm, shoes to protect your feet, etc), siempre hay algo. Count your blessings and you’ll keep getting more and more of them.
6. Money matters
I had to incorporate money in one of my life lessons for Latinas because we were born to live abundant lives. Money is important because it makes the world go round. It is not good or bad, it just is. Money is a tool that we need in order to survive in this world. Developing a healthy relationship with money is crucial in order to live a life full of abundance and freedom. The thing is, it is possible for anyone, including you.
Unfortunately, many of us First-Gen Latinas grew up with limited resources therefore, creating a lack mindset. Once you put some effort in your relationship with money, you can improve it. Money matters because when you have it, you have more options. You’ll feel freer, more confident and more powerful. You’ll be able to use it to help make the world a better place. So start working on your abundance mindset today. If you need help with this, let me know!
7. There is always more than enough
To piggyback on the previous life lesson, there is always more than enough to go around. Our world is meant to be abundant. Nature is always giving without expecting anything in return. We have unlimited air to breathe, food that grows naturally, even water that doesn’t run out. Scarcity is a fear tactic that you don’t need to be a part of.
When it comes to business endeavors, the market is never saturated. No one has what you have. No one is you. You have your own story, your own voice, your own flavor and there is always more than enough space for everyone. Competition doesn’t exist. Everyone can win and there is more than enough to go around.
8. Have BIG dreams
First of all, simply dream. Allow yourself to dream, knowing that anything is possible. Life is meant to be a ride even during not so fun times. We chose this human experience to learn lessons and now that you know that you have all the control (life lesson #1), make sure you create BIG dreams.
I suggest you write them down somewhere to make them more tangible. If it feels “wrong” or “weird” to dream, ask yourself why. Journal it out or talk it out with someone such as a coach (I’m here to help when you’re ready). There may be some feelings of unworthiness that can be unpacked. Dreaming BIG had to make my list of life lessons for Latinas because we are capable and deserving of so much.
9. It’s never too late
It doesn’t matter how old you are. Your circumstances don’t matter either. Whatever it is that you want to pursue, go for it. It is truly never too late. Age is just a number. There are people in their later years that feel and look younger than they did when they were young. So go out and put yourself out there. Try new things, meet new people, just do it.
Don’t allow societal or familial pressures to get in the way (life lesson #3). Whatever it is that you desire was placed in your heart for a reason. Deep down you know you’ll feel so much better once you pursue it and it’s never too late to start.
10. The time is now
The final life lesson I have for you is that the time is now! There is no time like the present. It’s actually all we have. There’s nothing we can do about the past and we cannot guarantee that the future is going to come. I heard somewhere that relying on the future is selfish because who do we think we are thinking that it’s guaranteed? That resonated with me because like most people, we tend to think we will always have it.
Live in the moment as much as possible and take advantage of the present. Reach out to that person on your mind, tell your parents/siblings/friends you love them, enjoy that outdoor walk with your partner. And also, start that podcast/blog/business, go on that date, forgive the person who hurt you. Do what makes you happy. The time is now!

All these lessons are super relatable. As the eldest of four and a parent pleaser, I often think about some opportunities that I didn’t take because I’d be away from home and how I thought my parents wouldn’t approve. These lessons are something I would tell my younger self.
