As the year comes to an end, I’ve been doing a lot of reflecting. I’ve looked at everything I did as well as everything I learned. There have been ups and downs, of course, but I have to say this was a great year for me. In this post I’m sharing 10 life lessons I learned this year with hopes that you can take some with you for the new year.
When I think back to January Cande of this year, it’s hard to believe how much has changed. I was in a completely different head space. Being that I had recently ended a long term relationship, I was still healing from that life transition feeling lonely without family or a support system nearby. I also wasn’t taking care of myself, physically, so I looked and felt weak and unhealthy.
Fast forward to present day, I feel happier and healthier than ever. I also feel the most confident I’ve felt in a long time because I’ve been taking care of myself in all ways, all year. My biggest priority was creating a network here and I’m blessed to have that now. I also had opportunities to host workshops and be a guest in podcasts and worked with amazing clients. It’s been a great year. So after reflecting, I decided to share with you 10 life lessons I learned in 2023.
1. Life changes when you put yourself out there
The first life lesson I want to share with you involves putting yourself out there. You can plan, wish or dream all you want but without action, you’ll remain in the same place. One of my intentions for this year was to make new friends in my area. I started by attending meetups and networking events. By doing this, I met new people who have become my support system. That wouldn’t have happened if I didn’t put myself out there. As difficult as it was at first, it was totally worth it.
2. Time heals all wounds
Next on my list of life lessons of 2023 is that time heals all wounds. Some of us prefer to take action even when it comes to healing but there are times when you just have to allow time to do its thing. This pertains to the pain associated after a breakup or other life transitions. There’s ups and downs brought on by triggers but with time, it hurts less.
3. Your intuition is always right
I’m a big proponent of following your intuition. It is always speaking to you and it’s up to you to listen to and follow it. I know this, since I started finally honoring mine back in 2022 when I decided to ultimately end the long term relationship I was in. However, there was one particular instance where I didn’t listen to it this year and I paid the price for it. That is why my next life lesson is reminding you that your intuition is always right. Whether you choose to listen to it the first time or not, it’s always right.
4. You got nothing to lose by making the first move
Similar to the first lesson, making the first move can go a long way. You have nothing to lose by taking that chance. This year I reconnected with countless old friends, sorority sisters and even relatives after years of not seeing or speaking to them. A part of me felt a little weird reaching out to them since I was the one that pretty much disappeared but I had nothing to lose. They were happy to reconnect with me and it felt so good to catch up making up for lost time.
5. Give things a second chance
It’s easy to think that we are the same person we were in the past, but I want to challenge that thought. Our preferences can change over time since we are constantly growing and evolving. This year I decided to try camping again. I had only done it twice before almost a decade ago and didn’t recall it being a positive experience. Since I’ve fallen in love with nature, I decided to give camping a second chance and enjoyed it this time around. I also intentionally tried foods I’ve told myself I didn’t like, such as onions. That preference stayed the same, I still don’t like them. 🙂
6. It’s okay to take a step back
Another of my life lessons is that it’s okay to take a step back. Basically, it’s okay to change your mind. During the spring I thought I was ready to begin dating. Once I stepped into it, I realized I actually wasn’t and decided to take a step back in order to work on myself instead. I did get to meet great guys and learned a lot from that experience, but I intentionally decided to take a step back after giving it a try. So I want to encourage you to give yourself the permission to change your mind if that feels right to you.
7. Community makes the biggest difference
As mentioned earlier, one of my main intentions for 2023 was to make new friends in my area. I don’t have family here which has been challenging, so creating a network here has been my biggest blessing. I’ll go as far to say that having like minded friends is life changing. Having people you can rely on when you need someone, from spending a couple of hours together during the weekend, to calling them to vent, makes the biggest difference in life.
8. The more you let go, the more you receive
My next life lesson was a challenging one to learn and accept. Trying to control everything simply doesn’t work though. When it comes to manifestation, it’s good to get clear on what you want and to set those intentions but at some point it’s best to surrender and allow the magic to unfold. The more you let go, the more you receive.
9. Embrace silence
We live in a world full of distractions fighting for our attention 24/7. Although I don’t own a tv and don’t really watch movies or shows, I’ve always loved music. I listen to music throughout my day whether I’m walking my dog, cooking, running errands or even showering. I also had been sleeping to the sound of white noise for over a decade. This year I decided to intentionally embrace silence. I’m proud to say I’ve been sleeping in silence for months now and it feels so good. I also began meditating in silence for longer periods of time and those were the moments that brought the biggest breakthroughs for me. Embracing silence is life changing because you’re creating space for whatever needs to be seen.
10. It’s never too late
The last of my life lessons is that it’s never too late. It’s never too late to start something new. You can implement new habits, learn new skills, try new things, change your look. It’s never too late to change your ways. For example, I grew up with parents who were not very affectionate. That caused me to be the same way as an adult with friends and romantic partners. With time, I’ve changed that. I also started verbally expressing my love to my parents, something we rarely did. Now they verbally express their love for me too, on their own. It feels so good to see positive changes like this one. It’s never too late to start.
One final thought I have about my 10 life lessons for 2023 is that life is an ongoing journey. I plan on taking these life lessons with me for the new year too. Everything comes down to choosing yourself and having an intention behind your choices and actions. I hope you have made some time to reflect on this year and have created some intentions/resolutions for 2024. My final reminder to you is that anything is possible. You are capable of creating the life you want, it’s never too late to start taking steps towards it.
