Whether you choose to believe it or not, everything is energy. The device you are using right now consists of energy, the clothes you’re wearing and your overall being consist of energy. Everything emits a frequency. The higher the vibration, the more elevated you’ll feel. The lower the vibration, the heavier and unsettled you’ll feel. This is why it is super important to protect your energy.
One example I’ve heard multiple times is walking into a room where something tragic or a fight took place. The energy in those environments feel uncomfortable. In a previous post, I wrote about ways to have a more positive mindset. Unfortunately, we’re going to encounter people who have the opposite of that.
In this post, I’m going to share 4 steps to protect your energy from negative people. I’ll explain why it’s important to start by checking in with yourself. Then I’ll share a few modalities to use to protect your energy so that you can live in peace and harmony.
1. Check in with yourself
First thing to do is check in with how you feel. Did you wake up feeling tired, anxious, calm? It is always a good idea to sit for a few minutes before you start your day. One minute is plenty of time if that’s all you have.
Sit up straight with your feet planted on the ground. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Notice how you’re feeling. Our body will send us signals such as a racing heart, scattered thoughts, shortness of breath, etc when we’re out of alignment. By checking in with yourself, you’re allowing yourself the opportunity to either reset if you notice you’re feeling uneasy. If you’re feeling calm, checking in gives you that realization that the next step is remaining in that peaceful high vibe state.
2. Set boundaries
Now that you checked in with yourself, an effective way to protect yourself from negative energy is by setting boundaries. We have the power to choose who we exchange our energy with. I know there can be energy vampires in our families or workplace. When that’s the case, choose to limit your interactions with those people.
One way you can do that in the workplace is by choosing not to be around those certain people when you don’t need to be.
- Don’t feel peer pressured into eating lunch with everyone if it doesn’t feel right that day
- Go out for a walk during your breaks if possible instead
- Call a friend or loved one that will help your energy stay high vibe
- Keep headphones with you so that you can listen to your favorite music or podcasts
If you’re at a family gathering and you encounter energy drainers there, give yourself permission to keep them at a distance. As a First-Gen Latina, sometimes I feel like I can’t straight up skip some family functions. What I can do is keep interactions super short and surround myself with my favorite primas. Sometimes I have to remind myself that I’m a grown ass woman and I can choose who I interact with, family or not. I remind myself that by doing this, I’m setting a new standard for myself and for generations to come (it can be that deep).
Going back to boundaries, be clear and let your voice be heard if you don’t want to interact with certain people. Your energy is important. Protecting it is worth it.
3. Use crystals
If you’re unable to avoid certain people or circumstances, a great way to protect your energy is by using crystals. (Yes, I’m going there). Crystals have been used for thousands of years. They have been used in a variety of ways. With anything, there will be skeptics and that’s okay. Having an intention is key when using crystals. So even if some say they work due to a placebo effect, that is okay too.
As a First-Gen, I grew up seeing babies wear a red bracelet for protection. Also, I’ve seen pictures of a Santito in cars, wallets, etc offering protection too. Crystals serve a similar function too. The goal is to protect your energy. Some of my favorite protection crystals are black tourmaline and clear quartz.

Black tourmaline is a protection stone that also helps with grounding. It is my go-to when I want to protect my energy. I had one at my work desk with me at all times. Wearing jewelry with this crystal can be an easy way to protect your energy.
Clear quartz is the most versatile crystal. The most important thing to do when using this crystal is set an intention for its use. Hold it in your right hand, raise your left hand to connect with source energy, then either state your intention out loud or internally. You can intend for your clear quartz crystal to not only protect you but also repel negative energy too.
4. Renew
The last step to protect your energy is by renewing it. Even if you felt high vibe all day, it’s always a good idea to cleanse it so that you have a fresh start the following day. One way to cleanse your energy is by burning sage.

Sage has been used in Native American traditions. It’s important to remember that sage is a sacred herb and it should be used with clear intentions and gratitude. Always open doors and windows to allow the smoke (and energy) out. I like to turn on ceiling fans also to help move the energy faster. If I’m only going to sage myself, I typically do it outside to make it easier. I like to take apart the sage bundle and burn one leaf at a time to make it easier to use. The smoke from sage purifies the air it comes in contact with. I like to intend my energy to be cleansed as I wave the sage filling my surroundings with smoke. It can be that simple.
Another way to cleanse your energy is by using water. Taking a shower can be one of the most cleansing things to do especially if you imagine yourself clearing all of the energy from your day. Taking a bath using your favorite essential oils or epsom salt are cleansing as well. As I’ve stated before, intention can make all the difference.
Final thoughts
So there you go. I gave you a quick 4 step way to protect your energy from negative people or circumstances. I hope you use these techniques to prevent anyone from bringing you down. Always remember to do your own research and go with what resonates with your highest self the most!
