Do you enjoy watching documentaries but don’t know which to choose from at this point? In this post I’m giving you 5 documentaries that will expand your mind. They will help take you to the next level of your world so you can live a healthier, more expansive life.
Documentaries have been a part of my self-development journey since over a decade ago. When I became a vegetarian in 2005, I watched every food industry documentary I could get my hands on. Needless to say, I’m still not eating animals lol. I’ve watched countless informational films exposing systems in a variety of topics.
I believe it’s important to stay informed and documentaries are a great way to learn because the filmmakers put in so much work and effort into doing just that. The following list consists of 5 documentaries that I believe will expand your thinking. Most of them were released a couple years ago but the information is still relevant today. You’ll find links for the trailers at the end of this post.
1. Heal
Released in 2017, the documentary description from Amazon Prime video is the following: “A documentary film that takes us on a scientific and spiritual journey where we discover that by changing one’s perceptions, beliefs, and emotions, the human body can heal itself from any dis-ease.”

This had to be the first choice on my list of documentaries that will expand your mind. What I loved about this film is that they featured “ordinary” people who have healed from different types of illnesses, even chronic ones deemed “incurable.” Some of the featured professionals include, Dr. Deepak Chopra, Dr. Joe Dispenza, Bruce H Lipton, PhD and Anthony William (the Medical Medium). This documentary gives you a new perspective in healing yourself. The human body knows what to do once you provide the right tools. You’ll learn all about healing yourself in this documentary. You’ll also learn that emotional blockages are a bigger culprit than you can imagine.
2. Fed up
Released in 2014, the documentary description from Amazon Prime video is the following: “Fed Up blows the lid off everything we thought we knew about food and exercise, revealing a 30-year campaign by the food industry-aided by the U.S. government-to mislead and confuse the American public.”

If you’ve struggled with your eating habits and can’t seem to understand why, this film will enlighten you. You’ll realize that there are bigger systems in place to make you fail in terms of eating healthy (especially if you attended public schools and/or lived in a low income neighborhood). This film explains the childhood obesity crisis in America and goes in depth at how processed sugar is to blame. Sugar is practically in EVERYTHING! This film will inspire you to take your power back and begin being more intentional with the foods you put in your body.
3. The Earthing Movie
Released in 2019, the documentary description from Amazon Prime video is the following: “The Earthing Movie is a documentary that reveals the scientific phenomenon of how we can heal our bodies by doing the simplest thing that a person can do standing barefoot on the earth.”

The reason I chose this film is because it provides so much knowledge on reducing inflammation in our bodies by doing something so simple. “Earthing” (also known as “grounding”) is the act of connecting to the Earth by simply standing on the ground (barefoot). By doing this practice, you get healing benefits because the Earth provides neurons that reduce silent inflammation in the body. Inflammation is the cause of so many illnesses such as chronic pain, Alzheimers, cancer, etc. The film provides medical evidence on this practice and it will convince you to give it a try next time you are enjoying the outdoors.
4. Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things
Released in 2015, the documentary description from Amazon prime video is the following: “How might your life be better with less? Minimalism: A Documentary About the Important Things examines the many flavors of minimalism by taking the audience inside the lives of minimalists from all walks of life—families, entrepreneurs, architects, artists, journalists, scientists, and even a former Wall Street broker—all of whom are striving to live a meaningful life with less.”

I had to choose this film as one of the documentaries that will expand your mind because I don’t know about you, but as a First-Gen, I have witnessed my fair share of relatives accumulating things. In my opinion, I link it to moving to a new country with nothing. There is a feeling of needing to hold on to things “just in case.” I also believe that when we hoard things, we are perpetuating a “lack mentality” because we feel that there won’t be enough in the future so we might as well hold on to all the things now.
Finally, I believe that the more we consume, the more we need to self-reflect. This will help us find the root cause of that desire. Chances are, we are lacking fulfillment in other areas of our life. This film dives into all of those concepts and gives examples of people who have let go of most of their material things. It is a very eye opening film that I believe we can all learn from.
5. The Business of Being Born
Released in 2008, the documentary description from Amazon Prime video is the following: “The Business of Being Born explores the history of obstetrics, the history and function of midwives, and how many common medical practices may be doing new mothers more harm than good.

My final choice on my list of documentaries that will expand your mind is about childbirth. This is the oldest film on my list but I believe the information is still relevant today (unfortunately). This film explores childbirth in the United States, one of the richest countries in the world. Yet it has the highest maternal mortality rate among high-income countries. This film shows how the childbirth industry caters to the doctors delivering babies instead of the mothers. It also explains how medical decisions do not benefit mothers but are profiting industries. Childbirth is a natural and beautiful thing. It is not an illness so women should be treated better in hospitals and medical settings.
