During my decade-long personal development journey, I’ve participated in a bunch of different alternative healing methods. I’ve used reiki energy healing to unblock my chakras. I’ve also tried red light therapy for knee pain. In this post, I’m going to share 10 different alternative healing methods I’ve tried so that you can go do your own research and try any that resonate with you as well!
Living in the U.S, I’ve tried to refrain from using conventional medicine, for personal reasons. I believe there’s a time and place for Western medicine but when it comes to healing, I’ve decided to try alternative modalities. I’ve always been a curious person, which has been the reason why I’ve decided to try all of these alternative healing methods in the first place. There are still some I’m looking forward to trying such as acupuncture (yeah, I can’t believe I haven’t tried that one yet).
The following list contains 10 alternative healing methods I’ve tried throughout the years, in no specific order. My intention for this post is to introduce you to any you may have not heard of so that you can conduct your own research and possibly try them out for yourself. When it comes to trying new things, I believe the most important part is your intention behind it. The placebo effect is real so the best thing to do is try new things with an open mind, in my opinion.

Sound bath
A sound bath is a healing meditative experience where you are immersed and “bathed” in sound waves. Different sound bowls and gongs are used that carry specific sound frequencies. Particular frequencies are said to heal different energy centers of the body. I’ve attended a few sound baths in the past and I’ve always come out feeling way lighter, more relaxed and rejuvenated.
Red light therapy
I first heard about red light therapy from a YouTuber who used this type of therapy during his meditations. Red light therapy (RLT) uses low wavelength red light to treat the skin and other health conditions. I got a red light panel off of Amazon a few years ago and have been using it post running to treat knee pain or muscle soreness. I’ve also used it on my face since it’s said to stimulate collagen production helping with skin complexion and anti aging properties. 🙂
Reiki energy healing
Reiki is a Japanese form of energy healing. The practitioner uses their hands to transfer the life force energy (Qi) to the recipient. This type of healing unblocks the energy centers in the body (chakras) so if you’ve been feeling heavy or stuck and don’t have a logical reason as to why you feel this way, consider getting a reiki energy healing. (Fun fact: I became certified in this modality during my time in Hawaii).
Bodywork
One of the next alternative healing methods on my list is bodywork. Bodywork is a therapeutic technique to manipulate the soft tissues of the body. It is similar to a massage but bodywork typically targets one specific area per session and it involves breathwork and energy medicine.
During my session, we targeted my left jaw because I’ve been suffering from TMJ for as long as I can remember. As soon as the practitioner touched the side of my face, tears started streaming down my cheek. I couldn’t control it and it was a little embarrassing to be honest. I asked if that was normal and the practitioner quickly yet gently responded with, “absolutely.” Apparently, bodywork can release trapped emotions or trauma that has been stored in the body and you can experience a release via tears like I did.
Cold plunging
Cold plunging is a type of hydrotherapy where you immerse yourself in cold water for a short amount of time. Some of the benefits gained from this are pain relief, decreased inflammation and swelling, improved mood and sleep, and it boosts injury recovery (to name a few). Many people use cold water therapy to help with their mental health because it decreases the body’s sensitivity to stress. I’ve only tried this once but I look forward to trying it again in the future.
Hypnotherapy
After working with a licensed therapist, I realized I wanted to dive deeper in my healing journey. I felt that I wanted to explore previous lifetimes to find answers to questions I had so that’s when I decided to seek a past life regression. Hypnotherapy is a state of deep relaxation where your conscious mind is quieted. This allows your unconscious mind to access hidden memories, thoughts or feelings.
Hypnotherapy may help overcome certain phobias or behaviors such as nail biting, overeating or smoking cigarettes. It can also help access the root cause of an issue, symptom or disorder. For example, I wanted to know where a certain phobia originated from so during my past life regression, I went to the lifetime where I found the answer. It was so interesting to remember past life experiences. I can’t really describe it so you have to try this one out on your own. I just know that in one of my past lives, my dad (from this lifetime) was my son in a previous lifetime. This served as confirmation that we have a core group of souls that choose to continue reincarnating with you in order to assist in your evolution.
Breathwork
Also known as holotropic breathwork, it is a practice using controlled, rapid breathing patterns to achieve altered states of consciousness. Breathwork can help with mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, tension and stress. It can even release pent up energy and expel trauma that has been deeply rooted in the body. During my breathwork session I felt dizzy at one point and saw different colors and shapes. I also felt a release of stored emotions.
Float therapy
Also known as sensory deprivation, float therapy involves floating in an isolation tank that looks like a giant pod filled with water and Epsom salt. The water temperature is the same temperature as the skin. The pod is lightless and soundless and because of the amount of salt in the water, you float effortlessly the whole time.
Some of the benefits are deep relaxation, better sleep quality, improved muscle tension and improved circulation. The reason why I tried it though, was to help with jet lag after travel. Float therapy recalibrates your Circadian rhythm. It worked for me and the added bonus was experiencing a deep meditative state during my time in the pod.
Womb massage therapy
This is probably the most recent alternative healing modality I’ve tried. Womb massage therapy is a sacred non-invasive, relaxing, gentle massage technique performed on the upper and lower abdomen. The focus is to revitalize the internal organs such as the uterus. Some of the benefits are that it alleviates painful periods, regulates menstrual cycles, encourages a displaced uterus to optimal position, improves fertility and it helps with detoxifying the body. I felt a sense of spiritual healing after this massage therapy.
Plant medicine
Out of all the alternative healing methods I’ve tried, this has been the most intense one. I participated in an ayahuasca ceremony that was definitely a life changing spiritual experience. Ayahuasca is a plant based psychedelic brewed drink that originates from South America.
Plant medicine is sacred and it is facilitated under the supervision of a shaman. During my plant medicine experience, I saw visions of my past and of my future. I astral traveled to other dimensions, and I got answers to questions I had been seeking. I’m not sure if I’ll try this one again but it was definitely worth it for me.
Final thoughts
A final thought I have about these alternative healing methods is that if you choose to try any of them, do so with an open mind. As mentioned in the beginning, this post wasn’t intended to be medical advice. I simply wanted to share the healing modalities I’ve tried throughout the years. Therefore, I encourage you to look up the ones that intrigued you. Then let me know your thoughts after giving them a try.
