If you’re driven and ambitious, you most likely have goals you’d like to accomplish. If you haven’t taken the steps to start working on them, you’re not alone. In this post I’m going to give you 6 reasons why you’re not taking action. The intention is to help you feel seen and validated, and to bring awareness so that you can then begin to take the necessary steps to create change.
As First-Gen Latinas, we are navigating a life different from the ones our previous family generations experienced. We grew up living between two worlds, trying to balance two cultures. For many of us, our parents sacrificed so much by moving to a new country in order to provide a better quality of life for us. This all is a recipe for hardships, self-imposed pressures, guilt, etc etc.
I say all this to validate your feelings. I know you’ve been doing the best you can with what you’ve known. However, I also know there is so much potential in you for more. Creating a beautiful life full of success, abundance and peace is available to you. You are able to accomplish all of your goals and dreams and if you haven’t started yet, here are some reasons why.

You don’t have clarity
One of the reasons you’re not taking action on your goals is because you still feel confused about them. You’re not clear on what you want yet. You are letting the past affect your current reality and future goals. You also most likely haven’t made a clear decision yet. You’re swaying back and forth about different possibilities so you have one foot out the door instead of deciding with full conviction.
You care too much about what others think
This next reason is pretty self explanatory. You’re allowing other people to dictate your decisions. Let’s say you have your clear goal in mind and you share it with others, you’re allowing their opinions to carry weight in you taking action. You’re focusing too much on what people, who have nothing to do with your goals, think.
Everyone will always have their own opinion. Most likely, they’ll push their own fears into their thoughts or opinions about your goals. Humans are so complex so you have to remember that you can’t please everyone. Stop giving your power away by entertaining other people’s opinions.
You’re afraid to fail
Another reason why you’re not taking action is because you’re afraid to fail. You’re scared to start and put in effort because you’re already thinking you might “fail.” Similar to not having clarity, you’re having one foot out the door instead of deciding and going all in on your goals. You’re scared of how it’ll feel if you fail. The fear is in the feelings and thoughts about it more than anything.
Think about it, everyone has failed at things they’ve tried at one point or another. You included. The biggest failure is not starting. Having that regret in your heart is heavier than the temporary feeling of “failing.” Personally, I don’t believe in failure. When something doesn’t work out, it just means it’s a redirection to another path that feels better. Also, facing “failure” is like building muscle. The more you do it the less heavy it feels and eventually it feels fun and empowering to face it.
You’re afraid to succeed
The next reason why you’re not taking action is because you’re scared to be successful. This one is often overlooked because it sounds ridiculous but it’s a valid reason. As First-Gen Latinas, many of us grew up seeing our immigrant parents struggle, living in survival mode. Witnessing the hustle culture, seeing our parents and family live like this had the potential to embed a feeling of guilt or discomfort when thinking of attaining success.
If all you’ve known is “doing the most,” working super hard with no time off, your body might reject anything different. You’ll subconsciously self-sabotage when you’re close to accomplishing your goals because you’re not used to life feeling easy. Then the thought of being successful (whatever that means to you) might feel foreign to you and it can also carry self-imposed pressure. You might be wondering if you’ll be able to handle the success and maintain it. That new territory might seem scary but you have to remember that if you manage to reach success, you’re able to handle anything and everything else that comes your way.
You want to be perfect
Another reason why you’re not taking action is because you’re seeking perfection. You feel like you don’t have what it takes yet. You’re constantly looking for more information to consume. Looking to get another certification, read more books, etc. You’re not trusting that you already have everything you need inside of you already.
You are doubting your skills and abilities by continuing to try to improve or change yourself. Well, I’m here to remind you that there is no such thing as perfection. No one is perfect so you have to just go for it and continue learning as you go. That is the best thing you can do.
You’re waiting for the right time
Similar to the previous reason, you’re not taking action because you’re waiting for the “right time.” You keep pushing your goals back for one reason or another but at the end of the day it’s just excuses. You’re allowing all the fears and reasons I mentioned above to take over. You’re relying on the future to begin to take action. Yet the future is not even guaranteed!
If you think about it, I’m sure you wished you had started sooner. Where would you be right now if you had started already? Well, you’re continuing an unhelpful pattern right now and will continue wishing you started today. The right time doesn’t exist. Well actually, I take that back. The right time does exist. It is TODAY.
Final thoughts
A final thought I have about reasons you’re not taking action is that whether you can relate to one or more of them, it’s valid. Don’t judge yourself for not starting yet. By doing that, it’ll make things worse and you’ll continue spiraling so instead, choose to see things differently. Keep it real and take ownership of the reasons or excuses you’ve allowed to stop you from accomplishing your goals. Then take the necessary steps to start today. So much can happen in a short amount of time.
