Have you heard of “earthing,” or “grounding?” What if I told you it is something super simple that can improve your wellbeing?? In this post I’m going to tell you what earthing is and why you’ll want to take off your shoes and go walk on the earth barefoot!
What is it?

Earthing, also known as “grounding,” means “connecting to the earth, to support the specific function of the organs of your body” according to The Earthing Movie. In simple terms, it’s making barefoot contact with the Earth. We are electric beings and when we have direct contact to the earth, we receive electrical charges that benefit our health.
The founder of the Earthing movement is Clint Ober, a retired veteran of the cable television industry. He pioneered the research behind grounding after seeing people wearing sneakers with rubber soles walking by one day. Remembering his Native American childhood friends and their deep connection to the Earth, this triggered a curious realization. He embarked on experimentation to find if humans would benefit from being directly connected to the earth.
He wondered if humans were insulating themselves from the electrical surface from the Earth. During his telecommunications career, he remembered grounding cable systems to protect them from electromagnetic waves interfering with the transmission carried through the cable. This gave him the idea to experiment with equipment on himself and his friends, eventually inventing indoor grounding systems. He has grounded more than one million people to date with the help of his products.
What are the benefits?
When your feet make contact with the earth, your bio-electrical system gets balanced. Various studies have been conducted researching this topic and there is scientific proof that earthing does work. Research has shown that disconnecting from direct contact with the Earth contributes to unwellness. “Reconnection with the Earth’s electrons has been found to promote intriguing physiological changes and subjective reports of well-being.”
Some of the benefits are the following:
- Improves sleep
- Reduces inflammation
- Reduces chronic pain
- Reduces fatigue
- Reduces stress (improved mood)
There are no negative side effects to this technique. It’s as natural as you can get since you’re not adding anything to your body. I need to mention that there are also spiritual benefits to this practice being that you’re literally connecting with nature. Earthing can bring a sense of connection and balance to your being. Our ancestors used to be connected to Mother Earth and with advances in civilization, we became disconnected. So it’s time to connect back to our roots.
How to begin grounding

Well the first (and easiest) way to begin this practice is by simply going outside, taking off your shoes and standing barefoot on the earth. You can set a timer on your phone (30 minutes to an hour is recommended) and do something else such as read, write or listen to a podcast while you’re outside. In order to get benefits, you don’t have to be physically standing. You can sit on a chair with your feet touching the ground or better yet, lie directly on the earth, while making contact with the earth. I like to sit on the ground or walk around my backyard after working out while drinking a cold healthy smoothie. 🙂
Since we tend to spend more time inside than outdoors, another way to receive these grounding benefits is by using a grounding device. Yes, there are a bunch of different types of products that will give you the same benefits as stepping on the ground outside. Some of these products include grounding blankets, mats, socks, sheets, pillow cases, etc.
Final Thoughts
So there you have it. Now you know all about earthing (a.k.a grounding) and learned how beneficial it can be for you! I hope this post has given you the permission to connect with Mother Earth and use her healing abilities. You literally have nothing to lose by making the decision to take off your shoes next time you’re outdoors. It’s also free! Chances are, you have been gaining these benefits without even knowing this technique has a name.
I’ll leave you with a message from the earthing founder, Clint Ober: “The way to live is to be connected to the Earth – grounded as much as possible − because being connected is like pulling a switch that enables your body to function more naturally and efficiently. Your body works electrically. You are a bioelectric being and you need connection with your natural electric source — the Earth’s electric energy. It establishes the most natural state of your electric body. It nourishes every cell.“
